Coping With Legal Issues

When I started getting into trouble I became pretty acclimated to legal procedures. Calling my attorney and working out bail was just another way to spend a Saturday night. Unfortunately, the stiffer the charges, the more difficult it was to talk my way out of a bad situation. After so many charges, I found myself slapped with a long jail sentence, and I realized that I wanted to turn things around. Fortunately, my lawyer was able to walk me through yet another process, so that I could make the right changes. My blog discusses how to emotionally cope with legal issues so that you can start living a good life.

Coping With Legal Issues

What To Do If A Cop Accuses You Of Drug Possession

by Lillian Wheeler

Facing drug possession allegations may leave you wondering what to do. There are several things a drug possession lawyer will want you to keep in mind.

Don't Engage With the Police

People often are tempted to try to explain why a situation is what it is. You're under no obligation to tell the cops anything, and the smart move is to exercise your right to remain silent. A police officer will happily chat with you and make it seem like you're just having a conversation. You might not realize just how incriminating something sounds until you hear the officer's body cam video played back in court.

Follow All Legal Instructions From the Cop

The police can ask you to do a few basic things, such as putting your arms and hands out to permit a pat-down search. Comply with these as much as reasonable. However, if they ask you to consent to a more invasive search, such as a blood test, tell them no. At a minimum, this will force the cops to get a search warrant before they can administer the test.

Retain Counsel ASAP

Drug possession law is complex, and the wise choice is to have someone present who knows the rules. Contact a drug possession lawyer as soon as you have the chance. Tell them what's happening, and then they'll tell you how they believe you should respond to the situation.

Avoid Asserting a Defense While Talking with the Police

If the cop thinks they have you on a drug possession charge, there's a good chance they have everything they believe they need to make it stick anyhow. Having a drawn-out conversation with the police officer about a specific defense, such as the drugs not being yours, is an invitation to trouble. Assert your right to remain silent and leave it to a drug possession lawyer to help you formulate a defense at a later time.

Make Mental Notes and Then Real Ones

As events unfold, try to take note of what's happening. When you get the first chance, try to get as much of your impression of what happened down as possible. These contemporaneous notes will ensure that your recollection of vents doesn't get fuzzy as time passes. They'll also be invaluable as your drug possession lawyer tries to piece things together regarding why you were stopped, how the cops conducted themselves, what the police claimed, and why you were arrested.
