Coping With Legal Issues

When I started getting into trouble I became pretty acclimated to legal procedures. Calling my attorney and working out bail was just another way to spend a Saturday night. Unfortunately, the stiffer the charges, the more difficult it was to talk my way out of a bad situation. After so many charges, I found myself slapped with a long jail sentence, and I realized that I wanted to turn things around. Fortunately, my lawyer was able to walk me through yet another process, so that I could make the right changes. My blog discusses how to emotionally cope with legal issues so that you can start living a good life.

Coping With Legal Issues

How Easy Is It To Be Released From Jail?

by Lillian Wheeler

When you are arrested under suspicion that you have committed a crime, you will not necessarily be given bail. For example, whether or not you are given bail depends on the severity of your crime and whether you are considered a flight risk. However, there are several ways in which you might be released from jail.

Citation Releases

If you are given a citation release, this means that you are given a written notice by the officer who has arrested you and you will then be able to go home and will be expected to show up to court. This is for minor crimes, and you will not have to pay any bail money.

Being Released on Your Own Personal Recognizance

Similar to a citation release is when you are released on your own personal recognizance. You might be granted this if you are not considered to be a threat to the community. You will not have to pay any bail money.

Cash Bail and Surety Bonds

If the judge decides to set bail, you will be able to use cash so that you can be released from jail. This can be done using cash or a credit card. However, because bail is often set so high, this is out of reach for most defendants. Therefore, a surety bond is most likely to be the type of bail bond you will be going with.

Fortunately, there are several late-hours bail bondsman services you can take advantage of. When you have been arrested, you will then want to contact a family member who can then get ahold of one of these services so that you can then be bailed out as soon as possible.

Obtaining a Surety Bond

When your family member contacts the bail bond agent, they will provide you with your full name and phone number. They will provide your booking number and the jail that you are currently in.

To be bailed out, your family member will need to fill out paperwork and must also pay a fee. This fee is set by the laws of the state in which you reside and is a percentage of the bail amount.

Collateral

The bail bond service will also require collateral. This could be a valuable possession such as a car, a deed to the house, or a piece of jewelry. However, if your family member has very good credit, they may not have to use collateral.
