Coping With Legal Issues

When I started getting into trouble I became pretty acclimated to legal procedures. Calling my attorney and working out bail was just another way to spend a Saturday night. Unfortunately, the stiffer the charges, the more difficult it was to talk my way out of a bad situation. After so many charges, I found myself slapped with a long jail sentence, and I realized that I wanted to turn things around. Fortunately, my lawyer was able to walk me through yet another process, so that I could make the right changes. My blog discusses how to emotionally cope with legal issues so that you can start living a good life.

Tips For Dealing With A Car Accident Claim When You're Not At Fault

by Lillian Wheeler

A car accident can disrupt your life, and when you're not at fault for the collision it can be very frustrating dealing with the other driver's insurance company in order to get your car accident claim paid. What you do in the days and weeks after the accident can make a big difference in how your claim is handled and what kind of settlement you receive. Use the following tips for dealing with a car accident claim after an accident that was not your fault:

Contact Your Auto Insurance Company

Depending on what type of auto insurance policy you have, your insurance company may be able to help you in the aftermath of a car accident. If your car is totaled or has extensive damage that makes it undrivable, your insurance company may be able to arrange for a rental car for you to use until your vehicle is repaired or replaced. You will not be responsible for paying for the cost of the rental car—your insurance company will go after the other driver's insurance company to recoup the money.

Hire an Attorney

One of the best things you can do if you have been in an accident and need to file a car accident claim is hire an attorney, especially if you were injured in the accident. An attorney who specializes in car accident cases will have the skills and expertise to work on your behalf and deal with the other driver's insurance company. When you have a lawyer, you are less likely to get a low-ball settlement offer or have issues getting the insurance company to pay the claim.

Don't Communicate with the Other Driver's Insurance Company

Insurance companies want to make money and pay out as little as possible. It is not uncommon for an insurance company to try to find a driver filing a claim partially at fault, even if their customer was cited for the accident. When you need to file a car accident claim and negotiate a settlement, it is in your best interest to not communicate with the other driver's insurance company directly, since any statements you give may be twisted around to be used against you. Tell the insurance company to get in contact with your attorney if they have questions or need information.

Take Your Medical Care Seriously

If you're injured in a car accident that was not your fault, it is essential to be diligent about your medical care. See your doctor promptly and attend all appointments until you are completely recovered. Your attorney will need your medical records when negotiating your settlement.
